If you have seen any Takashi Miike movies then you expect to be shocked. With Visitor Q the controversial Japanese director does not disappoint, not really a horror (although there are some gory moments) this movie is definitely extreme. Takashi Miike really pushes the boundaries of decency with this movie but manages to make a really prominent (if not a little disturbing) point. The movie was filmed with a DV camera as part of the Love Cinema Series, six movies from independent directors, as an exercise in exploring the benefits and drawbacks of using low-budget digital media to produce movies. Takashi Miike uses this opportunity to make a home video style look at the ultimate dysfunctional family through the lens of the father as he struggles to make a career as a TV reporter.

Kiyoshi Yamazaki is the failing TV reporter who has decided to make a documentary on the hopelessness of youth focusing on his family. The opening scene begins with Kiyoshi documenting himself with a young prostitute, the interview has soon become a sexual temptation and before long the dastardly act has begun. Dastardly because the young prostitute is Kiyoshi's daughter, Miki, and he is fully aware of what he is doing. That is scene one, which starts with the question "Have you ever done it with your Dad?"

After Miki teases her Dad for being an "Early Bird", scene two opens with the question "Have you ever been hit on the head?" This is where we meet the mysterious, unnamed Visitor who introduces himself to the Yamazaki family by hitting Kiyoshi on the head with a rock before following him home to meet the others.

The next question posed by the movie is "Have you ever hit your mom?", where we meet the rest of the family, the viciously bullied son, Takuya, who lakes out his anger by systematically beating his Mother, Keiko, a drug addict that finances her addiction by whoring herself out to men with fetishes for beaten women!

The Visitor stays with the family for a few days, unperturbed by the chaos in the family home, and sets about bringing love and harmony into the household in particularly twisted ways. The image obsessed, drug addicted and beaten mother is taught to relieve herself through lactation, which gives her the confidence to stand up to her son and gain his respect. The son begins to feel the family bond after seeing his mother relieve herself and amid a pool of breast milk decides that he should study harder.

Still failing to impress the network with his documentary on his bullied son, Kiyoshi asks for help from an ex-lover that he works with, she says that she cannot help and in a fit of rage and frustration of his sexual failings he rapes her, accidentally strangling her to death in the process. He and the visitor, who has filmed the whole situation, take the corpse back home for disposal. This is where Kiyoshi finds his happiness in a scene where Takashi Miike pulls out all of the stops. Whilst moving the corpse into the greenhouse, Kiyoshi finds himself aroused and begins to screw the dead ex, amazed at his stamina and his ability to get her wet even though she is dead, his high is ruined when he discovers that her wetness is due to other bodily functions and he becomes stuck as the rigor mortis kicks in. Kiyoshi and Keiko soon rekindle their love as they successfully unstuck him from the corpse with a combination of a bath full of vinegar and a shot of heroin.

The family endures a number of situations where their bonds become stronger, such as the murder of the bullies, corpse disposal and another rock to the head for Miki and we are left with a perfect family harmony and thanks to the twisted teachings of The Visitor.

It amazes me how such a disturbed movie can leave you with such a sense of well being at the end, nearly every scene shocks but the plot is executed in a way that gives the viewer a strange sense of sympathy for the extreme dysfunctions of the family. This movie has to be seen to be believed and Takashi Miike has once again managed to create a work of art pushing cynicism levels to the maximum whilst shocking and stirring up strange new emotions in the viewer.
