Horror Extreme Blog - I Said Do Not Look in the Basement

I’ve just watched "Don't Look in the Basement" aka "The Forgotten" and I had to mention it now!. The whole movie was set in "The Stephens Sanitarium" which houses a number of mental people and a minimal staff. Each "mental" has their own particular affliction which makes for an interesting set of characters and, of course, a lot of personality clashes.

The opening scene sees the demise of Dr Stephens (played by Michael Harvey) from the hands of "the Judge" (a resident). Dr. Stephens is experimenting with unusual psychiatric methods (such as giving "the Judge" and axe) so I guess he deserves it. This leaves the whole institute under the control of Dr Masters (Anne MacAdams) with the only other member of staff about to resign (I wonder if she does). Luckily, the week before, Dr Stephens hired a new nurse Charlotte Beals (super sexy ex-playboy model Rosie Holotik) and she just happens to turn up that day.

After a certain amount of patient interactions, strange goings-on and plenty of screaming from Nurse Beals (not very professional) the plot takes and interesting (yet quite predictable) twist. The story is well written and relies more on suspense and threat rather than gore and the characters are well played making this a pretty good horror movie.
