Horror Extreme Blog - Not Quite Evil Dead

The Slaughter was described to me as a horror comedy and compared to The Evil Dead. I was expecting either a really low budget, home-movie-ish piece of crap or a modern high budget surprise. I didn't really get either, and I'm not sure if I would even have called it a comedy.

The movie started really well with six students going to an abandoned old house on a clean up mission, with the intent on hard partying through the night. As usually happens in these situations they manage to awaken an ancient female demon (the house just happens to be built on a burial ground). The effects are far from big-budget but are pretty cool and the students meet their demise one-by-one in very gory ways (plus the investor in the property and his bitchy assistant).

When we are down to two survivors and the demon is fully resurrected the movie takes a bit of a twist and becomes a zombie flick with the gorified victims coming back to life to serve the demoness. I feel this is the point where director tried to inject the humor as it all becomes a bit slapstick.

This is a good movie (although it doesn’t compare to the Evil Dead Trilogy). The beginning is good and the ending is good, they just don’t seem to meet in the middle.
