Editorial Review - Description
A hideous monster from beyond the grave! A small California mountain community is terrorized by a murderous monster that is stalking the townspeople and savagely murdering them. The undead thing is believed to be the incarnation of an infamous Spanish Conquistador who was killed in the mountain during an Indian raid. Filmed in scenic Big Bear, California, this drive-in thriller is the first film effort of '50s cult filmmaker Richard Cunha and one of the last films of monster make-up artist Jack Pierce (Frankenstein, The Mummy).
I fear we have woken a sleeping giant...Adm. Bob Yamamoto, 1942
A Customer Review by John D. Aldridge
I saw this film when I was very young and it gave me nightmares for weeks. I dreaded falling asleep every night for the same nightmare would eventually replay itself in my innocent mind. It would start off with me in the middle of a dark forest, alone and confused. A wild howling could be heard in the distance, gradually coming closer. As it came closer, it would circle me. Thru the trees I could glimpse angry red eyes intently focused on me, the howling turning to a viscious snarl. The moon would break through and I could see a large furry shape, with strange humps and ridges. Large white knife-like teeth could be discerned in the dim light. Next, there I was alone with this huge beast crouching before me, ready to...uh, what a sec...is this the review place for "The Creature from the Plaid Lagoon"? It's not? Opps! Sor-ree!
Gigantic fun

Mysterious happenings at Devil's Crag. The local loco Indian (Billy Dix in a real bad wig) suspect's unscrupulous white men have stirred up an ancient Indian curse. The local Sheriff "nosey" Parker (Bob Steele) suspects the mysterious local archeologist, Wayne Brooks (Edward Kemmer.)
Mean wile back at the cabin Wayne is smitten by a beautiful girl Janet Cleveland (Sally Fraser of "Earth vs. the Spider" fame) the daughter of Dr. Frederick Cleveland (Morris Ankrum, of "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers" fame) who is in town temporarily to prove a theory.
Dr. Cleveland's theory is that in the 16th century a small band of Spanish Conquistadors were in the area lead by an unsavory Giant, Vargas (Buddy Baer), with bad teeth, and a penchant for pulling girls apart.
Just as lightning stuck Wayne's heart it also stuck the buried Vargas right in the axe. So Vargas reanimates to do his thing.
Will the Sheriff Parker believe Wayne's story about Vargas in time to save others from being dispatched or is it curtains of the local cutie Ann Brown (Joline Brand)?
We get to watch and kibitz.
