Horror Extreme Movie Catalog

Well, Videoasia finally did it. They finally put out a multi-pack where all the movies are at least decent. Most of their 5 and 10-packs only have 1 or 2 good movies, and some don't have any, so you may be able to understand how surprised I was to see this 5-pack at the store. I enjoyed all of the movies, even the spliced up z-grade Ninja Terminator.


Rebellious Reign-

Jimmy Lee stars alongside Norman Chu, Kwan Young Moon and Alan Chui in this near masterpeice produced by Lo Wai. The story is much more thought out than your average kung fu tale. Even though the movie on a whole is extremely strong, the fighting is what makes it so great. Kwan Young Moon and Jimmy Lee give their single greatest performances, and based on fighting alone, this movie is one of top 10 best kung fu movies ever. The ending is a super intense 17 minute non stop killfest. If you are not a fan of kung fu cinema, this may turn you into one. I don't know how Jimmy Lee didn't become a big star, but he sold every punch and kick so well that I honestly think he should have won an acting award. Unlike movies of today, Rebellious Reign has all the stuff I miss. Countless movements in a single take, stuntmen putting their lives on the line to make the action look good, and an epic story. Kung fu movies don't get any better than this.

Picture quality is good. The full screen presentation affects the action, but not enough to be distracting. Sadly this movie has still not had a proper widescreen release.



Five Fingers of Steel-

A star studded cast including Kwan Young Moon (My Young Auntie), Yen Shi Kwan (The Master Strikes), Hwang Jang Lee (Drunken Master) and Chu Tiet Wo (Legendary Weapons Of China / Shaw Bros / Special Edition). Good kung fu from all, and the story has a bit of a dark tone. The story isn't great, but the movie is worth watching because of the kung.

Shaolin Master and the Kid-

This is basically a Taiwanese version of Lone Wolf and Cub. Yueh Hua is a fantastic choice as the lead and carries the movie very well. Phillip Ko is superb in his role as an assassin, and Chen Sing and Leung Kar Yan have fighting cameos. This is one of those odd movies that seems cheesy at times, but overall it is very dark. Even though it copies Lone Wolf and Cub, it is still unique.

The picture is widescreened, but not all the way. Picture quality is surprisingly very good. Best quality in the 5-pack with Rebellious Reign a close second.



Crazy Guy With Super Kung Fu-

Lee I Min, Sun Jung-chi and some fat guy team up to take on Peng Kong. Peng Kong and Sun Jung-chi starred in and also directed the action for The Leg Fighters and Shaolin Vs Lama. Lee I Min is the kid with the Beatle's hair cut from Mystery of Chess Boxing and Seven Grandmasters. Unfortunately, the choreography isn't up to the standard of those movies. This is mainly a comedy, and the slight twist in the story at the end of the movie was done better than I expected. The kung fu is not bad, but it's only half as good as some of the other movies that Peng Kong and Sun Jung-chi have done. The movie is only 75 minutes long, and the fights take up most of the running time. The only fight that is really good is the finale. There are only a few of the trademark wrestling moves, but Peng Kong breaks out his crazy acrobatics for a fun 3 on 1 match.

This is the only DVD in the 5-pack that is fully widescreened, but unfortunately it has the worst picture quality by far. It is still watchable, and most of the fights can be seen clearly. Most importanly, everything is visible in the final fight.



Ninja Terminator-

A spliced up ninja cheesefest with Hwang Jang Lee, Richard Harrison and Jack Lam. Tons of good cheese and and Hwang wears a blonde wig!
