Video Nasties

A "Video Nasty" is a term popularised in the UK to refer to a number of films distributed via video cassette in the early eighties. These films were considered too violent and/or obscene to be viewed by the general public and created a mostly unsubstantiated hysteria hyped up by the press and various religious organisations.

Following a campaign by the NVALA (National Viewers and Listeners Association) and social liberal activist Mary Whitehouse, these video releases began to be prosecuted for obscenity as they were believed to violate the Obscene Publications act of 1959. The Obscene Publications act defined an obscene movie to be one which may "tend to deprave or corrupt persons who are likely, having regard to all relevant circumstances, to read, see or hear the matter contained or embodied in it".

If the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) considered that a certain video was in breach of the act then a prosecution could be brought against the movie's producers. To provide a guideline for video stockists, a list of 72 movies that had already resulted in successful prosecutions was published and this became known as the DPP list of Video Nasties. This resulted in a widespread hysteria with horror movies being blamed for the increase in violent crime amongst Britain's youth which eventually resulted in the Video Recordings Act 1984. This forced all video releases to be submitted to the BBFC for certification.

The passing of this act only increased the demand for these "black market" movies and created a large amount of notoriety for numerous terrible movies which would probably have gone unnoticed without it.

In recent years the censorship rules have become more relaxed and, since 2001, a number of these movies have been re-released uncut The majority have been re-released with scenes containing excessive violence to women or animal cruelty cut, the rest of the movies remain banned in the UK either because they have been refused certificates or have not been resubmitted for classification.

Don't Go in the Woods - Everyone has nightmares about the ugliest way to die.

Don't Go in the Woods is another slasher rescued from wrongful imprisonment in the short-lived purgatory known as the BBFC Video Nasty List. Don't Go in the House - If you do... then don't say we didn't warn you.

Video Nasties taught us a lot of things to "don't" do but some couldn't resist looking in the basement, riding on the late night trains and some were tempted to open the window despite not really knowing which window they were supposed to be wary of. In 1979 the temptation to do what shouldn’t be done arose again with Don't Go in the House, a fairl... Click to read more "Don't Go in the House"

As the number of "video nasties left to watch" list reduces in size it is becoming more and more apparent that many of the films are not worthy of their cult status. The majority of the watched list consists of low quality films fishing for controversy or mediocre movies hyped above and beyond their nastiness levels. The Witch Who Came from the Sea...
