Horror Extreme - Top Cannibal Video Nasties
Next in our countdown of "movies unfit for domestic viewing" we are going to focus on our top cannibal movies banned in the UK by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the early 1980's. A genre popular with Italian directors, the cannibal movies on the DPP Video Nasty list are among some of the most extreme movies banned as part of the Video Nasties frenzy, often unnecessarily violent and savage with disturbing scenes of cannibalism much more realistic than the other favourite Italian genre, the zombie movie (also notorious for depicting the consumption of human flesh). What follows are the Horror Extreme favorite nasty cannibal movies (in no particular order)... Read on if you dare!

Cannibal Holocaust

Cannibal Holocaust - Directed by Ruggero Deodato
As well as being a seriously depraved movie with some of the most gratuitous scenes of violence, torture and cruelty to animals seen on film, Cannibal Holocaust has a deep and almost political message to convey to the viewer and is considered to be a social commentary about civilized society. The movie focuses on the mistreatment and torture of a tribe of island natives by a team of American documentary makers. Unbeknownst to the Americans, the island is also home to a much more brutal tribe of cannibals who can't wait to get their teeth into some Caucasian flesh. Initially released in Italy, the director Ruggero Deodato was soon arrested on obscenity charges and later accused of making a snuff movie due to rumours that some actors were killed on camera. The movie was soon banned in Italy, the UK, Australia, and several other countries due to graphic gore, sexual violence, and because animals were killed on camera.

Cannibal Ferox

Umberto Lenzi's Cannibal Ferox
Another Italian exploitation movie with a definite cannibal theme is Umberto Lenzi's Cannibal Ferox (also know as Make them Die Slowly and Woman from Deep River). Upon it’s initial release the movie claimed to be the most violent movie ever made and contains scenes of castration, eye-gouging, torture, animal cruelty and of course, dining on human flesh. This movie contains no deep and meaningful message like Cannibal Holocaust, just a laughable script and plot and masses and masses of brutal gore. Supposedly banned in 31 countries this movie well deserved to be on the Video Nasties list (if a Video Nasties list was ever necessary).

Cannibal Terror

Cannibal Terror - Directed by Alain Deruelle
Cannibal Terror is a French/Spanish co-production about a group of knucklehead criminals that kidnap the daughter of a wealthy tycoon and decide to hideout in a cannibal infested jungle (as you do). This movie is the ultimate example of Euro Trash and is probably the reason that the phrase exists. Full of nudity and gut munching Cannibal Terror is more comical than disturbing but was still banned as a video nasty even though it is much less disturbing than it's Italian counterparts.

Cannibal Apocalypse

Cannibal Apocalypse - Directed by Antonio Margheriti
Somewhere between a cannibal movie and a zombie movie, Cannibal Apocalypse is about a couple of Vietnam veterans who, upon release from a prisoner of war camp, have a craving for human flesh. As they munch on various people that they interact with, the rabies like infection spreads and soon human is the top delicacy for the rapidly growing population of cannibal connoisseurs. This Italian/Spanish cannibal movie is a step away from the expected "natives in the jungle” cannibalism flick popular at the time but it still provides lashings of gore and an ending that you won't forget in a hurry. In the jungle, or in the city, still they must EAT!

Man from Deep River

Man From Deep River - Directed by Umberto Lenzi
Il paese del sesso selvaggio AKA Man from Deep River is another Italian exploitation movie from Umberto Lenzi and is considered the start of the cannibal movie genre in 1972 and inspired many of the "savages in the rainforest" movies that followed. As per some of the other movies in this feature the main reason that this movie got itself added to the nasty video list are the scenes of animal cruelty which seem to supersede unwarranted torture and violence towards humans.
